Manchester United won’t be hiring Sporting Club de Portugal manager Rúben Amorim in December, with the Portuguese side needing to keep him and his squad together.

That’s according to former president of the General Assembly of the Lions, Eduardo Barroso, who has been speaking to Leonino about the situation at the club.

Amorim has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the last month or so, with the pressure increasing on current manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman has found himself increasingly in the spotlight after a disappointing start to the season littered with disappointing results that has Manchester United sixth in the table, five points behind the top four and bottom of Group A in the Champions League with three points from four games.

The growing belief has been that United may look to change and several reports have made it clear that Amorim, who has been impressing in Portugal with Sporting, is among the leading candidates that would be looked at.

That suggestion has been rejected on several occasions in Portugal and Barroso continues that, insisting he can’t see a deal happening any time soon.

“We need to keep the coach and keep the players that are there. Rúben Amorim at Manchester United? I don’t believe he will leave in December, it’s impossible”, he is quoted as saying.

As Portuguese newspapers today write about the future of Sporting centre-backs, we get to see many mentions to Newcastle United.

Outlets O Jogo and Record coincidentally have stories about Gonçalo Inácio and Ousamane Diomande, claiming they both have been attracting interested clubs with their great form.

Starting with the Portuguese player, it’s said there’s quite a big competition for him, as besides Newcastle, the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been watching him.

Sporting are not expected to negotiate his sale. That means those clubs will need to trigger his release clause, which in the last contract negotiations, got raised to €60m.

Diomande, meanwhile, doesn’t attract the interest from as many clubs. As previously revealed this week, the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City had been keen on him in the past, but it’s really Newcastle who have been sending scouts to watch him in action.

Now even though the competition isn’t that fierce, the problem is that his price is even higher, as he has a €80m release clause, and Sporting want him protected at least until the end of the season.

Therefore, if Newcastle want both, they would have to pay €140m for their services, so it’s more likely it will be one or the other.

Villarreal have set their sights on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Gonçalo Guedes in the winter market, according to Radio Marca, relayed by Estadio Deportivo.

The winger moved to Wolves in 2022 and after struggling in the first few months, he joined Benfica on loan in January, before his temporary stay there was extended in the last window.

Villarreal have won three league games and have parted ways with two managers this season. They appointed Marcelino García Toral as their new coach earlier this week.

The manager needs reinforcements in January and his new side are preparing a ‘bombshell’, to sign the Wolves owned player in the winter market.

At Benfica, the Portugal international has been restricted to 159 minutes of action from seven games this season, largely due to his recovery from a knee injury. The 26-year-old ‘looks for a way out’ and the La Liga side are ready to open their door for him.

It’s claimed the Yellow Submarine intend to take the Wolves man on loan and also take care of his wages. Marcelino knows Guedes well as he managed him when they were at Valencia.

The new coach has given his approval to sign the attacker and the latter would welcome a move back to La Liga.

The report doesn’t mention Wolves’ stance on the possibility of ending Guedes’ stay at Benfica and then sending him on loan to Villarreal.

Reports this week in Portugal have insisted Guedes will stay for the full season.

Since Sporting released this week a financial report of their recent transfers, the Portuguese media has been looking for all unknown details of those moves.

That’s why newspaper Record now brings a piece about Youssef Chermiti’s sale to Everton, showing the Lions have the chance to bring him back in the future.

According to the document, Sporting have the ‘right of first refusal’. That means that once the Toffees get offers for Chermiti and they feel they will accept them, the Lisbon club must be warned and given the chance to match them.

Even in case Everton sell the player to some other club, Sporting still get 12.5% of this future sale.

The report claims that the Toffees spent €12.5m to sign Chermiti, with potential other €2.5m in bonuses. There’s also been a payment of €1.2m on commissions.

Chermiti is still working his way up at Everton. Since his arrival, he made six appearances, but only really had 29 minutes in the Premier League, and has been mostly used in the final minutes of matches. The attacker is still 19, though, so there’s a long time for him to develop.

This week, reports from the Portuguese media claimed that Newcastle United sent scouts to watch Ousmane Diomande in action for Sporting.

The Magpies’ interest in the defender was already being reported for a while, so it seemed like they were keeping up with their chase.

It turns out that something even more interesting is today brought by newspaper Record, who interviewed manager Ricardo Sousa.

The coach used to work at Diomande’s former club Mafra, and gave a little more details about Newcastle’s interest, claiming this pursuit has been going on for a while.

“Diomande is one of those players you can’t miss. Shortly before he left for Sporting, Manchester City’s chief scout called me and, before that, someone from Arsenal had already spoken to the club. So the recent interest from a club like Newcastle doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Sporting, with all due respect, is just a stepping stone in Diomande’s career, he’ll end up playing in a league with another dimension.”

Following Diomande’s loan spell at Mafra, he returned to Danish side FC Midtylland, and Sporting went after him. They only paid €7.5m to sign him back in January.

Now Sousa is pretty sure that the defender won’t stay with the Lions for much longer, as the Lisbon side will soon have a chance to make a big sale with him.

“He’s going to become one of the best centre-backs in the world, there’s no doubt about that. Sporting will sell him for 80 million euros or very close to that.”

As Newcastle prepare to possibly go for his signing, they should then be aware that those other Premier League clubs also made their moves for him in the past.

It seems Nottingham Forest may soon have a partner club in Portugal.

That’s because Record today reports that Evangelos Marinakis is willing to invest in Rio Ave.

The outlet writes that the Greek businessman is set to be introduced to club members in an extraordinary assembly which is scheduled for Sunday.

Rio Ave president Alexandrina Cruz will be the one presenting the project and letting the members vote on whether Marinakis should be accepted as their new investor.

It’s claimed that the Nottingham Forest owner has been leaving a good impression at the Portuguese side, as they’re happy with the offer, since that will attract an interesting amount of money to the club.

Marinakis wouldn’t exactly own Rio Ave, as he’d be an investor who’d follow the club closely. It’s recalled that he’s been interested in Portuguese football for a while, as there had been previous negotiations for his investment in Paços de Ferreira.

Depending on how the voting goes, we could soon see Nottingham Forest finding interesting opportunities to negotiate players with the Portuguese club, as they often do with Olympiacos.

It’s also an interesting route to bring players from South America, a tactic well used by Portuguese clubs.

Following early reports from the English media claiming Newcastle United had scouts watching Ousmane Diomande at the weekend, it’s now time for the Portuguese press to back up the news.

Newspaper Record writes that the Magpies ‘indeed’ sent an emissary to see the player in action in the Lisbon derby between Benfica and Sporting on Sunday.

The outlet claims that Arsenal and Chelsea are two other clubs who watch Diomande on a weekly basis, and Newcastle now joined the race by making a ‘report’ on his performance.

According to Record, Diomande has also been drawing approaches from Italy and German, but the ‘most likely’ destination for him is really the Premier League.

Even though the player has a contract with Sporting until 2027, there’s a renewal process going on, as his €300k yearly salary is expected to go much higher.

Regardless of his salary, his release clause is still pretty big, standing at €80m. But with Transfermarkt valuing him at €35m, Newcastle could probably end up finding a good margin of negotiation, as long as Arsenal and Chelsea don’t turn that into a big auction.

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper José Sá may have been called up by the Portuguese national team since 2017, but he hasn’t had the chance to make his international debut yet.

Now at the age of 30, regularly starting for Wolves, that opportunity is set to arise in the upcoming fixtures of the Euro qualifiers.

Sá spoke to the Portuguese media about the chance of making his debut, and quoted by Record, he explained how excited he is about that after Roberto Martinez spoke to him.

“He spoke to me and told me I’d be playing on Thursday [tomorrow]. I was obviously delighted and it’s going to be a dream for me, an unforgettable night that I’ll treasure all my life,” said José Sá in a press conference.

According to Record, there’s a big chance Sá will be used by Portugal in Thursday’s match against Liechtenstein.

For many years, José Sá had stayed on the bench while former Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patrício would be the regular starter.

Now they both see Porto’s Diogo Costa being Portugal’s number one, and they both wait for an opportunity to be on the pitch.

“It’s always difficult because only one can play and it’s Diogo who plays. Both Rui and I accept it and understand. We’re here to support him, because he needs it too. But we don’t stop working, we don’t know when we’ll be an option and that’s what we’re focussing on.”

Featuring for Wolves this season, Sá made 12 appearances, conceding 20 goals and keeping one clean sheet. Since his arrival at Molineux on a move from Olympiacos in 2021, he’s played 88 games for the club.

Despite all the big expectations, Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Gonçalo Guedes is still to show something great during his new loan at Benfica.

When the clubs agreed the fresh spell in the summer, he was still recovering from a knee injury, and the Eagles patiently waited for his return, which happened in October. Now, after seven appearances, he only has 159 minutes on the pitch, and just one assist.

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã today has a story claiming manager Roger Schmidt is ‘preparing Guedes for war’, as he was pleased with the few minutes the player had in the Lisbon derby and hopes he can be ready to help the team in the second part of the season.

The story treats the attacker as some kind of January reinforcement, as if his big period of recovery meant that Wolves are only loaning him to Benfica in the winter.

Correio da Manhã even mention something we had never read before, which is the possibility of the Eagles sending Guedes back to Molineux in the middle of the spell.

They say that scenario ‘has been ruled out’, though, as Benfica have big faith he’ll improve and have more impact in the final months of the season.

Wolves would then get him back next summer.

Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has been released from international duty with Portugal after being declared ‘clinically unfit’.

That’s according to Record, who cover the player today and how he will miss the current break after complaining of ‘muscle complaints’.

A report earlier today indicated that the Manchester City man was a doubt for Portugal’s upcoming final Euro 2024 qualifying games after missing the final training session on Tuesday.

The midfielder had reportedly been complaining of unidentified muscle complaints and there were doubts about whether he would be a part of the group travelling at some point this afternoon.

Record now follow that up and say that the Manchester City midfielder has not travelled with Roberto Martinez’s squad for the games against Liechtenstein and Iceland.

According to them he reported muscle complaints on Wednesday and was assessed by the FPF’s Health and Performance Unit, who found him to be ‘clinically unfit’ and this ‘dismissed’ him from the group.

This has also been confirmed in a statement on Portugal’s official website, who confirmed that the midfielder was deemed unfit after undergoing tests.

He has not travelled with the rest of the national delegation and will now presumably return to Manchester City to work with them and get back to full fitness.
